To the south of the town, 3km from the marina, is the Saint-Gilles lock. It enables yachtsmen to pass between the Rhône à Sète and the Petit Rhône to reach the Grand Rhône further upstream.
Marina
In the 11th and 12th centuries, the port of Saint-Gilles enjoyed a major economic boom, thanks to trade with countries bordering the Mediterranean and the transport of pilgrims to the Holy Land.
In the early 19th century, intense commercial activity followed with the digging of the Rhône-Sète canal. In 1985, the commercial port was transformed into a marina, with the redevelopment of the quay and the installation of facilities for yachtsmen. Today, the port of Saint-Gilles is the ideal starting point for a beautiful river excursion!
Petit Rhône
For about 60 km, the Petit Rhône flows through the Camargue countryside to the west of Saintes-Maries de-la-Mer, where it empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
It is north of Arles that the Petit Rhône leaves the main riverbed, symbolically separating the Petite Camargue from the Camargue.
Canal du Rhône à Sète
For about 100 km, the Canal du Rhône à Sète was built in the early 19th century to link the Rhône with the Canal du Midi.
A real communications hub for river cruises, it crosses the Camargue and its lakes before skirting the Mediterranean coastline.
