Situated in the middle of the Vistrenque plain, halfway between Nîmes and Beaucaire, the commune of Redessan is close to the Rhône and Provence, and borders the Costières plateau against which it rests.

History and Heritage of Redessan

Redessan is built on a plateau overlooking the Jonquières plain. The village retains its rural character, with a clock, a bullring, a main street, a church, a town hall, a square and a village hall.

The Church and its Bell Tower

In 1621, during the War of Religion, the church in Redessan was ransacked by Protestants. By the early 19th century, the church was in a poor state of repair due to the attacks it had suffered. A new church was built, reflecting a simple, severe Romanesque style, similar to that of the Basilica of Saint Paul in Nîmes.

The Clock

Decided in January 1818, the clock's location was contested, but finally approved after an inquiry. Partially destroyed by lightning in 1873, it was restored with a new mechanism in 1874, and replaced again in 1933.

The Domitian Way and the Borne Milliaire

On the edge of Jonquières is a milestone on the Via Domitia, known as the "Peire di novi" (stone of the betrothed). This is where marriage certificates used to be drawn up.

Natural Environment

Redessan is surrounded by the region's typical agricultural landscapes, with vineyards and orchards. These areas are ideal for walking and discovering the surrounding nature.
