The Temple of Diana

Historic sites and monuments

Nîmes

Its exact function is unknown... This is Nîmes' most romantic and enigmatic monument, certainly associated with the imperial sanctuary.

Its side corridors, which once led to an upper level, its various vaulted roofs and the niches in its great hall do not correspond to the construction elements typical of Greco-Roman temples. The origin of its name is equally mysterious.

Around 1570, the Venetian architect Palladio, during his stay in Nîmes, made numerous sketches before a fire gave the Temple de Diane its current appearance. Today, it consists of a barrel-vaulted nave and two side aisles, one of which, the south-east aisle, is almost completely destroyed.
