Esplanade Charles de Gaulle

Historic sites and monuments

Nîmes

The Esplanade Charles de Gaulle is a veritable urban garden covering almost a hectare in the heart of the city. The Pradier Fountain, sculpted in white marble by James Pradier, Grand Prix de Rome, has stood at the center of the Esplanade since 1845.

Opposite the station, in the middle of a garden, Nîmes welcomes visitors. If you look closely, the statue of a woman dominating this monumental fountain is topped by a Maison Carrée. Nîmes la belle is surrounded by four rivers: two naiads (the Nemausa spring and the Fontaine d'Eure), and two muscle-bound colossi (the Rhône and the Gardon).
