Architectural gems

A medieval soul preserved

As you wander through the narrow streets shaded by ancient plane trees, let yourself be enchanted by the authentic atmosphere of Bernis. The ancient feudal motte still looms timidly, a reminder of its medieval past. Lined with 19th-century bourgeois houses, the medieval circulade takes you back to a time when regional winegrowing reigned supreme.

Explore the narrow streets with evocative names such as rue de la Juiverie, rue de Four and Grand Rue, where every stone tells a story. The facades of old houses reveal discreet architectural relics that bear witness to the village's rich historical past.

Saint André church

In the heart of Bernis stands the church of Saint André, a veritable masterpiece of medieval architecture. Built in the 12th century on the foundations of a former Benedictine priory, it bears witness to the village's past splendor.

The nave's three bays of double overhangs and pink limestone facade adorned with a superb Provencal porch testify to its majestic character and historical importance. The bell tower, added much later in the 15th century, adds a touch of grandeur to this architectural ensemble. Inside, you'll be delighted to discover a milestone of Emperor Claudius, borrowed from the Via Domitia. This historical element illustrates the depth of the church's past, offering a captivating glimpse into its rich heritage.

The Clock Tower

Discover the Clock Tower of Bernis! Built around the 13th century, this tower has served a variety of purposes over the ages, from defense tower to municipal garage, before becoming the village's clock symbol in 1896. Its Asian-style bell tower is now the Bernis logo.

The Tour de l'Horloge, the town's cultural center, is a must-see when visiting Bernis.
