Museum
Caissargues
Permanent didactic archaeological exhibition.
The Lady of Caissargues, a 5,000-year-old woman (25 years old) discovered nearby, buried in foetal position, lived there 3,000 years BC.
The cast of the skeleton dubbed the "Dame de Caissargues" is on display at the archaeological museum, which also features a permanent exhibition evoking the lives of some of Languedoc's distant ancestors during the Copper Age.
The dead were buried close to the village, on the ground, protected only by a few stones. A total of 25 burials were discovered in Caissargues, including 5 children. They are single or double burials, in the ground, sometimes with small pits dug in the ground, with no particular arrangements to receive the dead.
The Prehistory Museum evokes the daily life of the Fontbouisse civilization, which settled in the region some 3,000 years ago.
A voice-activated guide will guide you through the museum, telling you the story of the Dame de Caissargues. The area was certainly occupied by the Romans, as remains of statues, fragments of pottery and epitaphs (funerary stelae with inscriptions) have been found at various archaeological sites. The name Caissargues comes from a Roman by the name of "CASSIUS", who gave it its name, Caissargues meaning "Property of Cassius". Nearby, the colonnades of the former Théâtre de Nîmes, which stood where the Carré d'Art is today before being burnt down in 1953. Built in the early 19th century and destroyed by a deliberate incident, the theater was magnified by a neo-Romanesque colonnade, which survived and was re-implanted in Caissargues during the landscaping of the freeway approaches. Today, newlyweds in their wedding attire traditionally come to be photographed under the colonnade.
The museum may be closed from time to time without notice.
